Course Overview:
Introduction to Dreadlocks: This module provides an overview of dreadlocks, including their history, cultural significance, and contemporary styles. Students will learn about different types of dreadlocks, techniques for creating and maintaining dreadlocks, and the role of dreadlocks in various cultures and communities.
Hair Anatomy and Texture Analysis: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of hair anatomy and texture, focusing on the characteristics of hair suitable for dreadlocks. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing hair texture, density, and porosity to determine the most suitable dreadlock techniques for different hair types.
Dreadlocks Techniques: This module covers a variety of dreadlock creation techniques, including backcombing, twisting, palm rolling, and interlocking. Students will learn how to choose the most appropriate technique based on hair type, desired dreadlock size, and client preferences.
Sectioning and Parting: Students will learn how to section and part hair effectively to create uniform and well-balanced dreadlocks. Topics include different parting techniques, section sizes, and patterns for creating various dreadlock styles.
Dreadlocks Installation: This module focuses on the process of installing dreadlocks using different techniques. Students will learn how to prepare the hair, apply tension, and secure dreadlocks to ensure durability and longevity.
Dreadlocks Maintenance: Students will learn how to maintain dreadlocks to keep them clean, healthy, and well-groomed. Topics include washing, conditioning, drying, and palm rolling techniques, as well as addressing common issues such as frizz, buildup, and breakage.
Dreadlocks Styling and Accessories: This module covers various styling techniques and accessories for enhancing dreadlock hairstyles. Students will learn how to style dreadlocks using braids, twists, updos, and hair accessories to create versatile and expressive looks.
Client Consultation and Communication: Emphasis will be placed on effective communication skills and client consultation techniques. Students will learn how to assess client needs, preferences, and expectations to provide personalized dreadlock services.
Ethics and Professionalism: Students will develop professionalism, ethics, and interpersonal skills necessary for success in the dreadlock industry. They will learn about client confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries, and professional conduct.
Salon Management and Business Skills: This module covers the fundamentals of salon management, including appointment scheduling, client management, retail sales, inventory management, and financial management. Students will also learn about marketing strategies and business development opportunities in the dreadlock industry.
Cultural Sensitivity and Diversity Awareness: Students will gain an understanding of cultural sensitivity and diversity awareness as it relates to dreadlocks. Emphasis will be placed on respecting cultural traditions, addressing stereotypes, and fostering inclusivity in the provision of dreadlock services.
Practical Training and Workshops: Hands-on practice sessions and workshops are integrated throughout the course to reinforce theoretical knowledge and develop practical skills. Students will have the opportunity to work on mannequin heads and practice dreadlock techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors.
Upon completion of the Dreadlocks Creation and Maintenance course at Sedney Institute of Technical and Vocational Training, students will be equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue a rewarding career as a professional dreadlock specialist or stylist. They will be prepared to offer a wide range of dreadlock services, including creation, maintenance, styling, and care, while maintaining the highest standards of quality, creativity, and client satisfaction.
