Course Overview:
Introduction to Braiding: This module provides an overview of braiding techniques, including their history, cultural significance, and contemporary styles. Students will learn about different types of braids, tools, and materials used in braiding, and the role of braiding in various cultures and communities.
Hair Anatomy and Texture Analysis: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of hair anatomy and texture, focusing on the characteristics of hair suitable for braiding. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing hair texture, density, and porosity to determine the most suitable braiding techniques for different hair types.
Basic Braiding Techniques: This module covers foundational braiding techniques, including three-strand braids, fishtail braids, and Dutch braids. Students will learn how to create these braids and incorporate them into various hairstyles.
Advanced Braiding Techniques: Students will explore advanced braiding techniques, including French braids, waterfall braids, rope braids, and box braids. Emphasis will be placed on mastering intricate braiding patterns and creating complex braided hairstyles.
Cornrow Braiding: This module focuses on cornrow braiding techniques, including straight-back cornrows, curved cornrows, and feed-in cornrows. Students will learn how to section and part hair effectively, braid close to the scalp, and create clean and uniform cornrow patterns.
Braided Updos and Ponytails: Students will learn how to create braided updos and ponytails using various braiding techniques. Topics include braided buns, braided ponytails, and braided crown hairstyles for formal and casual occasions.
Braided Extensions and Weaves: This module covers the use of braided extensions and weaves to add length, volume, and texture to hair. Students will learn about different types of braided extensions, including box braids, Senegalese twists, and crochet braids, and how to install them safely and securely.
Styling with Braids: Students will learn how to style hair using braids as the foundation. Topics include incorporating braids into updos, half-up half-down styles, and intricate braided designs for weddings, proms, and special events.
Client Consultation and Communication: Emphasis will be placed on effective communication skills and client consultation techniques. Students will learn how to assess client needs, preferences, and expectations to provide personalized braiding services.
Ethics and Professionalism: Students will develop professionalism, ethics, and interpersonal skills necessary for success in the braiding industry. They will learn about client confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries, and professional conduct.
Salon Management and Business Skills: This module covers the fundamentals of salon management, including appointment scheduling, client management, retail sales, inventory management, and financial management. Students will also learn about marketing strategies and business development opportunities in the braiding industry.
Cultural Sensitivity and Diversity Awareness: Students will gain an understanding of cultural sensitivity and diversity awareness as it relates to braiding. Emphasis will be placed on respecting cultural traditions, addressing stereotypes, and fostering inclusivity in the provision of braiding services.
Practical Training and Workshops: Hands-on practice sessions and workshops are integrated throughout the course to reinforce theoretical knowledge and develop practical skills. Students will have the opportunity to work on mannequin heads and practice braiding techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors.
Upon completion of the Braiding and Styling course at Sedney Institute of Technical and Vocational Training, students will be equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue a rewarding career as a professional braiding specialist or stylist.
